The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been on strike since February 14, 2022, over various issues ranging from the implementation of the 2009 agreement, the approval of their own payment system UTAS, and the welfare of their members. The strike has affected millions of students and staff in public universities across Nigeria. Here are some of the latest developments on the ASUU strike as of today, October 20, 2022. ASUU Suspends Eight-Month Strike

After several rounds of negotiations with the government and the House of Representatives, ASUU has finally suspended the strike it embarked on since February 14, 2022. ASUU ended the strike following an agreement reached with the government on October 13, 2022. The agreement includes the payment of outstanding salaries and allowances, the release of funds for revitalization of universities, and the acceptance of UTAS as an alternative to IPPIS.

The President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, announced the suspension of the strike at a press conference on October 14, 2022. He said that the union decided to suspend the strike in order to give the government time to fulfill its promises and to allow students to resume academic activities. He also warned that the union would resume the strike if the government fails to honor its commitments within six months.

ASUU Extends Strike by Eight More Weeks

Before suspending the strike, ASUU had extended it by eight more weeks on March 14, 2022. The extension was due to the failure of the government to meet their demands after one month of warning strike. One of the main issues that caused the deadlock was the payment system. ASUU wanted the government to approve their own payment system called University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS), which they claimed was more suitable for university operations than the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) imposed by the government.

The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, said that UTAS failed integrity test and that they were waiting for ASUU to upgrade their payment system and send it back to them for consideration and certification. However, ASUU said that they had not received any feedback from NITDA on UTAS and that they were ready to demonstrate its functionality to any interested party. ASUU Strike Update Today 2022

ASUU Strike Nigeria Update: Education Minister Begs Workers

As the strike lingered on, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, appealed to the workers of federal universities to call off their strike and resume work. He made this appeal on May 6, 2022, at a meeting convened by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, to resolve the strike issue. He said that the ministry had not abandoned their issues and that it was working hard to address them.

The workers of federal universities, under the umbrella of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), had joined ASUU in a nationwide strike since April 7, 2022. They were demanding for the implementation of their own agreement with the government, which included payment of earned allowances, review of retirement age, and resolution of discrepancies in IPPIS.

The spokesperson for the Joint Action Committee of SSANU and NASU, Adeyemi Peters, said that they hoped that the apology from the ministry of education was genuine and that they were ready to implement their agreement. He also said that they would consult with their members before taking any decision on calling off or continuing with the strike. ASUU Strike Update Today 2022

Conclusion

The ASUU strike has been one of the longest and most disruptive industrial actions in Nigeria’s history. It has caused a lot of hardship and frustration for students, staff, parents, and stakeholders in the education sector. The suspension of the strike is a welcome development that will hopefully restore normalcy and stability in public universities. However, it is also important that both parties keep their promises and avoid any future conflict that may jeopardize academic activities again.
