Smith started her career 1968 as a model and actress in commercials and print ads. She was a “Breck girl” for Breck Shampoo in 1971 and a spokesmodel for Wella Balsam shampoo in 1974. She also appeared in minor roles in films such as Goodbye, Columbus (1969) and The Adventurers (1970).

In 1976, she was cast as Kelly Garrett in Charlie’s Angels alongside Kate Jackson and Farrah Fawcett. The show was a huge success and made Smith a household name. She was the only original female lead to remain with the series for its complete run from 1976 to 1981. She reprised the role with cameo appearances in the films Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003) and Charlie’s Angels (2019).
